Brilliant, just simply brilliant!

13th

Today started off a little differently.

today was the day of Rochelle's grandfarther's funeral.
I got in my fancy pants and went for Rochelle. She'd let me know that i was welcome, so I thought I'd go for her.
I didn't know him all that well, but as her older brother Tim expressed, 'i was one of the lucky ones who got to meet him'.
And i guess i do consider myself lucky. he remembered me from what i hear.
Which is pretty special.

Rochelle and her Mum were both very turn up by it, understandably.

the service was very different to what I'm used to.
it was a catholic service, and I did have to try hard not to let my mind go...for example, in Matthew it says;
"And when you pray do NOT use vain repetitions as the religious leaders do..."
Which was on my mind a lot as it was happening.
but oh well, I wasn't there for the service, i was there to support Rochelle and her family.

i should probably go...i'm at work, but i'm actually at my Dad's work, as my printer has died and I need to borrow theirs...so because my dad is currently in a meeting i'm actually getting paid for hanging out at my dads work, using my brothers computer, drinking free coffee...and writing in my blog :)
Love this job.

Any way,

God bless you all!

jonny.

(Spa prayer tonight..i'll let you know how it goes. SOOO stocked :)

Moz moz

hello All

So i just got home from down south in Mosgiel!
Go go SamStock!

For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a three day music festival which was started a while back by one of the local youth groups (i think). think of it as WoodStock, with more Sam and waaaaay less people!

Firstly, i'd like to thank Chris and Ange...becasue I we couldn't have enjoyed the trip nearly as much with out them. I.E. Chris' general ability to make a tent...a tent. And Ange's ability to organise :D We had Chicken salad wraps for dinner!! That's better than I usually eat at home!
AND she has a coffee plunger! My goodness she's fantastic haha.

I'll upload a photo or two of what happened to our tend haha. I'm at work at the moment so I don't have a great deal of time, but we'll see.

Also I would LOVE to thank God. Um...thank you! I'm alive which is a bit of a mirical! After realizing (AFTER I WAS DEDICATED TO THE MOVE) that there wasn't QUITE enough room to pass a guy who'd pulled over for me, before the landrover hit us at probably over 100k!!!
That wouldn't have been pretty haha.
BUT trust in the lord with all things, if I died then there would have been a purpose, clearly though he wanted me alive. so YAY! Here i am telling you all about it :D

Any way, I must go and do a few more canvases. (YAY three day back log...actually it's really small, quite disappointed)

Enjoy

The Christophers in my life

there has been much happenings recently which i haven't been able to tell you all about, but that's cool....cause no one ever comments on here any way.

the post is an ode to the Chris' in my life.

We'll start with the middle one.

My best mate Christopher Pennington.

he has recently been a complete freak and doing daily 10.5k runs, yesterday he decided that a smooth 19k was in order however and basically...he's gonna make a good cop.

Kapai Chris.

Then the youngest Chris.
Top sales man here at Hanafins (at least he used to be...then sickness set in, and blah blah blah..he's awesome).
He made about $900 straight profit yesterday in the store, and it wasn't that busy a day.
he's got himself a band, a little more "emo' i guess one might say than AirPlay, but we're totally planning a tour of the south island in a years time.
So look out for that :D

Then there is Chirs Muer (Sorry man i can't spell your last name!)

this guy...ah man, what to say about this guy.
he's one of the kindest loving serving and over all awesome guys I know. And he's an awesome singer!
he's been leading a bible study for a while now on tuesday nights, which I've been attending. And it's fantastic. THANKS MAN!
Also congrats to him, because just a few days ago he got himself engaged :D
So YAAY!

i should go back and work again now.
BYEBYE!

Jonny.

Sorry

Hello

Sorry I've been super slack with updating...no internet sure makes it harder.

So I'm printing more canvas, yay canvas!

Umm..okay what's news...

I got my full license today :D so Sam Stock here we come!
taking paul down, it's gonna be great.
hopefully Tim will also join us, it'd be awesome to take him to the gig that caused me to buy Claire.

Oh...my germanium died :(
got itself into a PNP type power supply some hoooow.
SO looks like I'll be replacing those.
Any one know where I can get AA112 doides from in this city? They are amazing wee things.

okay, peanut productions now has the following mics and recording gear to play with;

1 x Sure Beta57a
1 x Rode NT-1a
1 x CAD 7pc drum mic set
1 x Trion 7000 ribbon mic
2 x Rode NT-5
2 x Rode K2!!
1 x Set of Event monitors (my goodness it's like hearing for the first time again!)
1 x Alesis io/26 (firewire)
A bunch of really good leads, some average mic stands (one good one though)
and a bunch of assorted crappy dynamics that i've had for a while.

i love the K2's, just...just love them.
once they're warmed up it's hard not to sound like Thom Yorke :D
Which makes me very happy.

Any way, my canvase are printed, so i shold really go stretch them and start on the next lot.

Enjoy

Coffee And Radiohead

Hmm, I feel guilty writing this post, becasue I'm at work.

mind you, the "not for personal" use sign is on the Lab computer, and I'm in the canvasing room. So i think that helps a little.
Plus I'm waiting for a job to print, so what are you gonna do right?

This job's pretty sweet really.
I basically make canvases, and print other peoples photos all day long.
Could be worse.

It's the Coffe and radiohead that keeps me going how ever.

Any way. had a wee get together with Tim last friday and jammed for a while.
Some cool ideas coming along I think.

There will most definitely be new songs coming at some point soon.
And now that we've got the ability to record to a semi pro level....there might ever be wee clips/sound bites up here soonish.

I've got a bit of a problem that I need suggestions on;
Basically AirPlay currently has no where to practice.
remembering of course that in a practice space there needs to be, a piano, a drum-kit and a small PA.
Ideas any one?
Just on friday afternoons.

I was thinking maybe organize a place to rent for like 3 hours once a week, not sure if those places exist though.

Again, ideas?

Any way, canvas is printed.

Hopefully it wont be too much longer until we find a place, and start getting some clips up...and gigs happening.

Any one got a bass they'd like to donate to Steve?

Enjoy

Back

This is a happy sunday, becasue i finally have access to the interent.
I'm having dinner with my parents, and grandparents, who i haven't seen in too long.

Again I showed my inner nerd today, and bread boarded myself a fuzz pedal.
I like it, so it's staying, I'll put up photos when i can.

It's kinda strange being back in NZ now.
it's like, the only city. The only people (although people change) the known hastles of inner city life.
but, it's all just so different.

Got a job working a photo lab at hanafins though, so that's cool (Sorry libby).
I got the position with in 24 hours of handing in my CV, so I thought that was pretty good work.

Sorry I've been really slack with organizing band stuff, moving in and sorting out a job have taken up a lot of time.
BUT now that those are more or less sorted, we can start making plans, start working out practice times etc.
Should be fun hehe.
And I'll be able to lay along with my brand new (new old stock i suppose if you wanna be pickey) Arbiter Fuzz Face, complete with AC128s for that hendrix tone...Hmmmm

Any way, must go.

See you all soon.

Knives Out

Knives out
Squash it's head
Don't look down
Shove it in your mouth

Look into my eyes
it's the only way I'll know you're telling the truth.

...Wonder what he's talking about.
The video clip suggests it's a relationship thing (man it's an awesome clip haha...so weird).

I'm nearly packed..but I just ran out of tape..damn
Only bought it this morning.
Still got my computer to pack as you may be able to tell.
Hmm, not sureeee when I'll get round to packing that.
Oh well, it'll get there.

Any way, leaving tomorrow after noon..and for now I'm going to learn Knives Out

Mosh

Not sleeping, just resting my eyes.

A while ago I moved to Rarotonga.
Now I move back ey.

Timings right. I've got a flat ready, in which we've already started building a recording studio. So it wont be long now.

Any way, thought I'd let you know that I wont be posting for a while because I've got to pack my computer tonight and don't know when I'll be able to sign in again.

Hope you've all had a good time.
Now it's time to make some more music...get back into things.

See you soon Christchurch.

Good quality photos

just thought i'd upload a decent photo of my beautiful monster.

i had it going today with my guitar.
Sounds beautiful! (bar the earth noise..which will be taken care of as soon as i can).
Must buy a choke first, then earth the amp to the chassis.
But I'll do that when i install the choke...no point pulling it all apart twice.

But yes..I like it!
Lots.

Okay Tube run down;

Two Electro Harmonics EL34's
One "made in Yugoslavia" ECC83 in the phase rotating section
and a Marshall ECC83 in the preamp
waaaaarm!

Oh plus it's freakishly loud! YAY

Enjoy
Jonny.

Alace..it can not be finished just yet.

Mellow

Well, bad news.
The amp can't be "finished" until I move back to NZ and buy a choke.
Turns out that if EL34's are extremely sensative to the 50htz (or in this case 100..casue we're using a bridge).
And with these schematics, a simple wire wound resistor won't do the trick as we'd hopped.
BUT the good news is that it's actually a usable amp now :D
okay it's noisy, but it's nothing compared to how it was last night.

We put the heater current through a wee filter system (Common on old radios and amps apparently..very basic circuit) and now it's working fine.

For the moment there is a lot of noise at low volumes, and a lot of distortion at high volume (although..it's actual tube distortion and I'm sound would sound quite nice on a guitar).
BUT once i install the choke this will all go away.

I'm pretty pleased with it.
I mean...I built a freak'n tube amp! haha
(well..i soldered stuff, Herman "built" the amp...but I helpped).

Got to admit..I don't think I've learned this much in this short a period ever.
Good fun. i can actually look at a schematic now and kinda tell you what's going on (Hmm..IC's I'm not so good with..but I'm learning).

SO list of things to do;
1. Install choke
2. Complete first ever Fud Gun (experimental fuzz/distortion)
3. Build wave generator using ICL8038 IC. For use on stage.

Much much more to come.
Hopefully some nice ovredrive slash distortion pedals.

Here's a photo of the nearly completed amp.

Enjoy

Jonny.

The 50hz Terror

hey

Well the amp is finished (photos to come).
BUT we've got a wee problem....it's as noisy as a pair of porcupines on their honey-moon!
Well okay the power amp section is actually quieter than that the Rain Dance Kid.
but the pre-amp and phase rotation circuits have some serious humm in them.

I've gone through and shielded anything touching a gate on all of the tubes, and it helped a little. We're going to go through and double check the schematics to make sure we don't have something retardedly wrong, but we've already double checked (against my self drawn copy how ever) so now we're going back to the originals.

It made some pretty cool sounds though I must admit.
like the trebble knob was kind of a high pass square wave generator cross.
And the bass was kinda like an LFO filter
Good times.

Any way wish me luck.

There is also a possibility that I'll be buying a big dirty marshall.
So either way I'll have at least one working amp.
Hopefully we can get this tube dude to work well though, it's just so cool (very loud haha, very loud...yay).

Any way..I'm counting down the days until I'm back...currently I have 12 left.
HmmI should really get packing.

Luck me.

Jonny.

PS a dollar to who ever IDs this pedal....come on, this ones pretty easy.

Amp Uptade

THE TUBES GLOW!

This made me very happy.
We took the tubes through their first break in warming the other day.
The EL34s look awesome! Nice and bright, with a nice wee amount of heat being emitted.
The ECC83s didn't look so good...but it's cause the heater is hidden inside the metal section of the gate. But not to worry, we grabbed a few older versions of the same tube and plugged them in, and you can see the heaters in those.
so YAY!

We've also finished the power-supply section. Which even when off stores a handy 365v.
And when on....well, we haven't been silly enough to lick it lets just say that.

Last night we stared work on the power amp section, and are nearly finished.
The chassis is a little small for the massive caps we have for the powersection, so things are getting a little crampped already, but that's all good.
Just enough room for everything, with what looks like enough space for the high-watt resistors to do their thing with out burning out.

These are a few photos of the amp as of two nights ago.
I'll take more tonight. It's beginning to look like an amp.
w00t!

Oh also, i think I've designed a tube version of the fuzz face.
I think. I'll have to run my schematics past Herman tonight (plus, it'll need like 150volts to run, so that could be an interestingly big pedal haha).

Enjoy

Jonny.

Gilligans's Fuzz

hehe, it even works!

Haven't tried it yet with a guitar..or an amp..as I don't have either with me at the moment (they're sitting happily in storage in NZ awaiting my return).
But I tried it with a tiny test amp and a DVD player...got some awesome over tones hehe.
Built roughly to the orignal Dalas Fuzz Face schematics...so yeah, think hendrix...in a nut shell (oOoo, I know I liked it too...:P)

Any way, once I can I'll get a demo video up here.
Also, soon I will be starting on my own custom fuzz...and I mean custom!
I've head a lot of fuzzes..and I think I've designed one i'd be proud to call my own.
And depending on the success of my first few prototypes, I'm thinking of making them for sale when i move back to NZ.
So...get orders in :P

Enjoy

Jonny.
PS>..the NZ made Fuzzes don't come in Coconut shells.

KD50?

Hmm I'm trying to think of a good name for this amp.

KD50 sounds a little too..normal.
Plus, it'd stand for Knopp/Dusbaba 50.
I decided that KD sounds better than DK

Any way, this is the chassis (although sorry you can't see just how awesome it is in this light)

This is the amp mounting. With everything now in place, it's just a case of doing the hard stuff haha.

And this is a Herman.

Tip for today;
"Having the right tools is half the work."

Sorry nothing else handy to tell you haha.

Maybe I like it there

Hello

Well, good news. AirPlay will be starting regular practises again, and will be beginning a long recording process, as I am coming back.

yeah big decisions, and kinda scary.
I'm moving back on the 2nd of July.

Stupid money..it's gonna cost me about a grand to move back...any one wanna give me some cash?

I've just finished a CV, cause I'll need a job I guess - nothing as cool as building boats I'll admit, but hopefully something entertaining.
IF I could get into the RockShop or something like that, that'd make me a pretty happy dude.

Some times I wonder why I moved here in the first place..it kinda cost me a lot.
But I'm sure there was some reason for it, and lots has happened, so yeah....but for the moment I just want to make music with the guys, so back i come.

Sorry I feel like I'm still writing a CV...but I'm not..so its all coming out retardedly.

lets just finish with..I'm coming back!
And there will be gigs!...soonish haha. Give us a little time to practise and then there will be gigs haha.

Enjoy..
Jonny.

The Chassis

Another important part of the amp will of course be the chassis.
I'm building my own...cause I can.

For this I've used 8 x 1 clears (finished wood...not tatty like it comes when you buy it cheap).

It's not yet finished, but here's what it looks like so far.
Just a partial front panel, a lot of sanding, and some varnish to go.

In other news, the guy who I'm building this amp with, Herman Dusbaba, is currently teaching me about other electronics, while we're waiting for parts to come.
Today I fixed my first microwave, very exciting hehe.
Plus I could do with the company on this island.

any way, heres the box.

Oh plus, in the post below..add a small capacitor to the end of that circuit in parallel with the diodes..that should smooth it off a little, perhaps even make it sound nice..if you're lucky.

Enjoy

Jonny.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Was A Pedal

Fuzzy wasn't a bear at all!

So last night, while in a deep state of Kalnoream I remembered something I'd seen a long time ago.
Clipping, symmetric clipping.
As in, two diods at the end of a boost circuit which basically create a margin of clean for AC.
So I gave enough time for my Gua'ld to heal me, and started into a circuit.

I started with a basic boost circuit, using a BC549 transistor.
I then placed a rather large knob at the front, and ran it inbetween the input cap, and a larger cap which went to earth. This meant that i could boost either bass or trebble depending on where I set the pot. Then came the clipping.
And you know what, it actually worked.

A subtle subtle distortion was obtained with a fair amount of boost.
This I think would be a good beginner circuit..after all, I managed to do it (slash, make it up of random pieces of ideas in my head) .
So if you're looking to start into making your own gear, try this circuit.
Plus it's small, and wont cost any more than like, $20 to try...shouldn't at least.

Enjoy.

Red Head 50

This post is the beginning of my amp build, more will follow.

This post has firstly, a brief history on the vacuum tube.
And secondly the first steps in my build project.

In the beginning there were tubes.

There was the ECC83's who served, doing all the smaller tasks worthy of a less powerful being. Just above them there were the EL84, who took the roll of gate keepers, book keepers and such.
Running the city there were a vast array of rectifier rubes, who kept the city in order. At the top sad the mighty EL34, in all his tonal might.

For a long time this was a good and orderly system.

One day, many years later how ever there was unrest in the smaller tubes.
"Why do we eat so poorly, work so hard, and some of us ever have to sleep in the barns with the capacitors and pots. When the bigger tubes live healthy, carefree lives at our expense!? It's time we struck back!"

So the ECC83 and alike picked up their sockets and stormed towards the center of the city. Where all the big tubes lived.

They reached the city streets that they swept every day, which only encouraged their flames of hatred.
A long and tiresome battle took place shortly after, the city was desolate with smashed glass. Tubes were strewn across the road, their inners becoming outers, and none of them were very happy.

What they didn't know is that the mighty EL34 was on holiday, in America (where he was hailed 6CA7, and make king there too).
Upon his arrival he was angry, his city lay in ruins.
he knew punishment had to be dished with the cold spoon of fury to stop civil disobedience once again staining the city with the nasty aftertaste of war.

With his cathode outstretched he used his superior 25watts of power to banish the evil doing tubes to the stock piles of radio shack and jaycar outlets.
Here they have remained until this day, raising an army...thus the transistor revolution was born.

I swear, that's how it happened.

Okay, now here's the actual post that I was gonna start off with :P

So I'm building an amp :)
w00t!

You want to build an amp too?
Good, well you can find everything you need in order to build one here on this site.
The following posts will all be labled with the same heading, so you can find them easily, and they should lead you through your own amp project.

Step one, getting parts.

If you're a noob, you won't have a hope of understanding the schematics.
it's important that you find some one to help you with this, or else you amp will not work. And you'll most likelly kill yourself with the 375v that this amp can sting you with.

Secondly, you wont know where to get parts from.

You can try your local DSE or JayCar, but there are parts you'll need to order from other countries.
These include the out put transformer, and probably some high voltage caps.

I'd personally suggest the Tube Amp Doctor in germany for these parts (they're greate)
http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/index.php

For this amp, you're probably going to end up spending close to $800 if you're lucky.
So now is the time to decide if it's worth it or now (NOT after you've blown your mains transformer and have to throw it all away!)

you'll find a complete parts list on this site soon.

Okay, so far I'm still awaiting postage on my output transformer, but here's what I've got so far.

Note all the caps in these photos are rated at a voltage suitable to their purpose (for example the blue ones are rated at 350v. And there are a few more coming, rated at 450v. If they aren't at the right voltage rating it is possible to blow them up..and ruin everything).

Any way, it's getting late.
I'll upload the schematics as soon as I can, at the moment I've only got my wee hand drawn version which won't do so well when compressed.
So I'll upload those, and hopefully i'll be able to provide some useful info for building your very own amp. And if nothing else, just provide a semi entertaining blog for your reading-ness.

Enjoy

Jonny.

back in Raro

..guess what.

I'm back in Raro.

And am feeling a little sick.

Although after a nice clean up, and restring, my acoustic is sounding amazing through my new FDR-1.

By now

1. you should have ALL checked out Andrews Twisted logic page.
2. I have bought most of the parts I need for my amp (bar a few annoyingly hard to find resistors..and caps)
3. I have seen nearly every one of my old friends from this country.
4. I have talked about home way too much.
5. I have recorded a band.
6. I have used all bar 13 of my months' texts.
7. I have left way too many comments on Bebo.
8. I have neglected this site too much, and it might bite me soon if I continue.
9. I have drove through town again :)
10. I have eatten chocolate.
11. I have started about 4 new songs.
12. I have spent over...$500?
13. I have not missed my life in Rarotonga.
14. I have used near a months worth of internet.
15. I have made three semi (but only semi) successful guitar pedals. (including a loop of my own design..it's fancy)

My lifes treating me pretty sweetly at the moment.
Found today some tubes, a nice set of EL34's at JayCar.
They're only $49 each, which is a bonus (because at music planet they were gonna charge me $75 for them).
Also, added bonus they are Electro Harmonics, which means much to guitarists.
I still can't find an output transformer, but have been given the name "Steve bartlet" a few times, so I'll have to give him a wee call.

Dad and Cathrine left for Australia this morning...at 4am (woot...for getting up early).
So I have the house until Friday...come over and I'll poke you in the eye!

It is kind of a nice feeling having the place to myself, no pressure...kinda reminds me of the rest of my life :)

Any way kiddies, I've got to ring Steve now.
So I shall see you all later.

Also if you get this before..now
Go to the Wunderbar tonight, Twisted Logic are playing, and if you're into alternatice semi free jazz, then they're right up your tree.

love

jonny.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Go check out twisted logic's page!

hrr

I've got to stop comparing myself to Thom Yorke.
it's just plain disappointing.

I'm ambitious in my planning of AirPlay's first full length album.
it'll be about a year until it's finished, but I'm still looking forward to it.

All i have is a few images in my head at the moment.
Mainly the classic falling in dreams etc. but oh well.
trying to embody that feeling you get when you're sleeping, and your heart slows down..which is why you feel like you're falling through your bed.
And the sudden bang, after which you wake up, is your body going;
"AH!"
and boosting it back into action, so you don't relax yourself to death.
but yeah, trying to write that feeling into music is giving me a head ach.

Oh man, i'm not looking forward to going back to Rarotonga.
Where there is no piano.
AH, my key'd friend will be gone from me again.
oho well, soon I'll be back, and will hopefully have my own.

hmm...just looking at radiohead's new titles and lyrics;

"Up on the ladder"
"You let your people down"
"15 steps then a share drop"
"jigsaw falling into place"
"you real me out and then you cut the string"

...falling seems to be on the minds of more people than just me.

Still I need some more pictures and then hopefully it'll be all go.

Ah..okay I'm gonna go restring my crafter.

new ideas

Shards of rock line the ever descending walls of the cavern.
From this angle you'd think you could see to the bottom.
Mist rises up from the depths, as fires burn, carried infront of the men who once hunted you.

You can not see them through the smoke, and the terrifyingly long fall to the bottom which was enough to unnerve even the most experienced of you.

In the distance a pare of eyes gleam in as the blue moon light streams in through a crack in the rock.
You catch them perfectly with your own, and they shiver the very spine in your back.
Shivering and scared you move on as ordered.

The rope around your throat tightens with the pull of the guiding hand you've all come to know as boss.

no one has explained where you're going, but you know it involves finding a rout down these walls.

Often you've looked up and wished, wondered why all this is happening.
Why you are you, and not one of them.
You've wished for so many things. land, family, freedom.
Patiently waiting for them to come to fruition.

The rope bounding your hands is cut. You are to use them to scale the rock face into the deep blackness of the cavern.
The rock is so cold you struggle to touch it with out your hand becoming useless.
but you press on, for fear of what awaits you if you do not.

You've wished for less fear. For less things to be fearful of.
no more ropes, no more damp clothes, no more darkness.
Wished that you could one day be dry and perhaps even in sun light.

But for now you press against the wall, your fragile nearly transparent skin losing it's grip on the cliff.
You stumble for a second as a voice breaks the long silence which has plagued the past two days.
it screams and bounces off the opposing walls, the sound fills the space, and seems to linger in the air long after it should have disappeared. The cliff faces hurl the noise back and forth like a game, each time it hits you like a boulder landing on your back.
You regain your grip on the wall.

Few paces more now, but you keep looking down. Into the black.
Into the end, into the one place you think would be worse than where you are now.
you come to a tiny ledge, barley big enough for you to place both feet.
Placing both hands palm down on the wall, you stand on the ledge, and look out to the other side of the cavern.
it must be a few hundred meters away. no detail from your angle, just the shimmers of light coming from below, suggestions of its shape.

You remember the brilliant sun light. The green of the pastures below you, as you held your child above yourself. Staring into her eyes as you spin around on the grass.
You remember the red and the yellow of the falling leaves above the tire swing you had made her.
Your wife waits for the two of you to be back, the table is set.
You remember a perfect life.
You remember waking from that, knowing it never happened.

You continue your journey.

This is the beginning of an idea i've got.
it'll involve a lot of work, and wont be finished for at least a year.

hope you like it once it's finished.

Oh Also, if you're a graphic designer I need to talk to you.
please leave a comment or something. i'm going multi media with this one.

So...guess where I am

That's right.

Back in the sunny city of Christchurch for the winter.
Well a few weeks of it at least.

No idea when I'm going back yet, but for now, i'm here and that's all that's important right.

Walked for a while around the city today.
that was kind of refreshing.
buildings, different people. people I don't know, and have never seen before.
The random whos night was hard, and is taking it easy on his coffee,
the girl who thinks shes late t work becasue of daylight saving.
it was nice.

Any way, just thought I'd update you on my international status.
Give me a call or something if you're a friend, other wise you won't have my number.

HUG

Jonny.

OH OH OH! By the way, recorded my brothers band Twisted Logic today. Absolutly awesome Jazz trio (not jazz..strictly, but freak'n amazing. Look them up on MySpace, they're freak'n awesomeeeee!)

..man RHS rules!

Well i just received word that Riccarton High School has again gotten a team through to Wellington for the Sheillah Winn Shakespeare festival.

Boy does that bring back memories of when i was in such a team.

..words can't really describe the pride I have in my old drama teacher and friends who have made it through. So I'll just stick with saying well done! And break legs in welly.

I just wish I could have seen it.

Again awesome work.

Jonny.

Jonny's solo stuff example

hello all.

As the title may ave suggested this is a wee example of my solo stuff at the moment.
Happily linked in from YouTube, because the blooger system is annoying :D
yaay.

The mixing isn't what it SHOULD (and does) sound like because of the compression I had to put on it to upload. So it'll sound better in CD form.

hope you like it

Lame lame lame

Well....

We all remember the day I bought that funkey little Vox P10 right (in video below)
just how happy I was and stuff, and how awesome it sounded.
Well the other day, while going through the process of making a boost pedal, I had a rather large short in the pedal.
This cut all the power from my room off, and actually made a wee fire inside the pedal casing. Pedal still works fine.
Weird thing is that the power leaked into my amp....and burned part of the circuit.

So i just got a call from Herman the electrician who fixed it (In good time to have to say) and, well...it's gonna cost me $118.70 for the repairs.
Which kinda sucks big.

But I guess lesson leaned ey. Always get quotes first, and never mess with 240v's...Oh also, when making stuff, use chop sticks to prod electronics with. Not a screwdriver.
Man, just thinking about it..I must have been really tired at the time, cause I made so many stupid mistakes.
Oh well.

LOL cats..eat your heart out.

WIth out me, it's just "aweso"

Solo projects coming along nicelly.
Just finished recording another song, and have like...6 more to get sorted and ready for recording at some point soon.
I've just been way too lazy haha.

Found the noise reducer in Nuendo....haaandy thing when dealing with my guitar haha.
A bit too much noise coming out of it...not sure what's wrong though. Might be something that needs a wee re-earthing in my board.

I need a name for this solo project.
It's hard haha.
Don't like naming stuff :P

I'll keep you informed I supose hehe.
I'll hopefully be finishing it before like...mid April, so I'll have something bring home with me (for when I go on holiday in NZ..in about mid april)

Annnny who, if any one's got any good ideas for titles let me know haha.

Selectiveness

Selective memory haunts my brain
I am here, but I'm too late
Selective memory is to blame
and I forget, if we're the same

hold it in your little hand
it's too much, consumed in sands
and say it with your little voice
but it's too loud, you're making noise

Selective memory haunts my ways
i am here, and whats your name?
And theres a file missing named
things you need, and things to say
photos of my past are saved
with this name

and i blame my youth
for all the stupid things I've done
and I blame my youth
for all the stupid games I've won

Hmm..possible song (if I can remember how it sounded).

hehe, just had a fantastic idea.

OKay...so Christchurch police..not too well feared right.
So why is this?
They're limited as to what they can do, and also they've gained a pretty bad rep through the media.
So my solution;

Just picture this.

There is a group of 8 kids, all with hoodies on, walking like they have a fake left knee. Obviously gonna cause trouble, obviously up to no good.
One of our beloved boys in blue walks into the group (knowing he can't do anything as they haven't committed any crime yet) he holds up his badge, and just gently says to the group;
"You kids be good now okay".

What's gonna happen?..he's likely to have his hands cut off by some kid on P.

now my solution.

Just picture this.
There is a group of 8 kids, all with hoodies on, walking like they have a fake left knee. Obviously gonna cause trouble, obviously up to no good.
One of our beloved boys in blue walks into the group. he is dressed like a clown from hell! he holds up his shinny new chain saw and revs it a few times, and just gently says to the group in a low husky voice;
"You kids be good now okay".

how much more fear would that put in the hearts of this generation of drop outs coming up through the ranks?!

I think I should be the new commissioner.

I will not give in

Gate way blocked, key swallowed.
blocking
brick, steal, barking dogs
nothing in, nothing out.
Quarantine.
Flue
Ill
Sickness
Pop disease
Pop disease

Behold my views on Bebo.

yet saddly, I had to.
Had to. for the greater good...you'll find out in time i'm sure.

I'd upload a picture to spice up this post, but we're over our usage..which sucks.

Man this island is boring at night! honestly. Like, if I didn't work it wouldn't be so bad, because i could go take the motorbike and just drive around the place. but NO, I've got to be all bright and early.
it's times like these when I wish I could just sleep a year or so...and still keep up with my own development.

Oh well...won't be too long now until I'm back.

Oh and while I think of it..here's a picture of my awesome wobbly cat, O'brian.

he's so coool hehe. He's got a poisoning which is locally known as fish poisoning. Basically is just screws you up neurologically so he wobbles every and stuff.
Still happy as can be, and a very cuddly cat :D

Ideas abundant

I'm currently developing a distortion pedal for my brother..well..if he wants it haha.
I've basically just used the circuits from an Arbiter Fuzz Face, and a Muffmaster Boost, and thrown them together with a few added parts.
Basically, the big switch bank means you can chose what between different fuzz caps, this ofcourse if still under the gain knob.
The little two pin switch in there is for feedback with in the Fuzz pedal, which basically means that when you hit that switch, the whole thing self oscillates..making cooool sounds.

i can't wait to build it..but..it might take a little time since I'm on this island..where there is NO DSE

Any who, feel free to make this and tell me how it sounds.
Oh and I'm not 100% on the powering..might want to check that with some one who knows about these things I try.

Any who..enjoy

Gate ways

Infinite possibilities is terms of circular travel, which all en up in the same place, as they are based in circular, thus never ending, transit.
Circle theory (basic explanation for time and history as a pre existing, and never ending cycle of life etc).

Liner theory
Time is a straight line, with events marked on it through out history. Never ending, and never beginning.

Wibbily Wobbly time Jelly theory
Time is a collective of events, all happening at some point in time, relative to our own understanding. In theory if it were possible to alter our understanding of time itself, we could move through these events freely, thus completing time travel.

paper theory
This assumes that time is a straight line. This theory proposes to bend the line onto itself, thus creating a bridge between the now, and then. It would be impossible to go forward in time, as that part of the line hasn't come into existence yet (unless of course the line has been crossed back before, therefor you would in fact be in some ones relative past, and therefor could jump forward as far as their relative present).

Time is measured by the beating of a censuim atom (sorry can't spell that) which beats at just over 9.2billion times a second. This is how atomic clocks work.
Time how ever if relative to the periods in which we count it. there was an experiment done where by one atomic clock was placed on the ground, and another in a jet. The jet flew around the world as fast as it could, and came back to the original position. The clocks were out of sync when they were compared upon arrival.
This is proof that time dilation exists. Although the difference was less than a fraction of a milli second, it still happened, and therefor if the experiment was conducted on a larger scale (at higher speeds etc) it is possible that the moving clock would count time slower.
If a person was to count time in both areas, it would appear the same to him/her in both situations, but would in fact be moving slower (relatively) in the situation with the moving clock.
Thus proving that time is relative to perception.

So..what use is this?
..it's not really useful at all..it's just interesting.

Even more interesting is when you combine my two favorite areas of conditioned response, relative to situation.
this means, Time Theory and 2+2=5 Theory.

If a child was brought up from birth with a clock that always ran slowelly, he/she would assume that there were lets say, 7 hours in a "day".

How weird would that be?

Now is when I'd like to bring a point into this blog..but..really..there is none

There really is NO point to knowing about time etc, because, you're going to die.
Weather a person dies at 77 years, after having lived for 77 years, or he dies at 33 years after living what we would call a 77 year period really makes no difference. The only thing that happens is, he died at an old age.
...so....what now?
no idea..just wanted to type something, and this came out.

Enjoy

We need our "own" site..we really do

morning people

Well...as the title suggests, i really want our own site.
like a fully custom coded one, with cool role over icons, and music samples.
Where exactly I'd get one of these, I'm not sure.
I can KINDA design, but the coding baffles me.

Any way, guess i'll work on that.

I'm SEMI meant to be working on a site for my boss, slash, not really. but i kinda suggested it, and so i should PROBABLY do something.
I guess it could be good practice for when I make our one.

Hmm..today I;

Modified a tiny radio so that it can be used through our power amp (home system). this means we finally have an Am/Fm receiver again (not that i listen to the radio in any nation)
I watched the first three episodes of stargate SG-1 Season3/
Annnd...something else, can't remember, but I know I did soomething else important today.

Hmm oh well, it'll come back eventually.

Ummmm..here have a photo!

Oh yeah, I wrote a song, I think...Hmm if I did i 'll remember it eventually I guess.
Hope I did. man I'm tired.
Oh well hehe

okay, photo time;

Took this while looking for my bosses boat that went missing.
he's flying the plane.

YAY

byebye

okay this is kinda new post, because I don't want it to look like I've posted more than once in like, 3 hours..kinda sad I know.
i'm boreeed! That's all

Any way, I just realized that I forgot to tell you about my awesome mod on my bridge. basically I've wanted a decent bridge for a while now, like a good brass one or something, but haven't been able to find anything. Until now!
While sanding the hell out of a boat which I just finished covering in carbon fiber (nasty nasty stuff that)i had a thought;
Man, this stuff is easy to make into other things, and it's way harder than my existing bridge.
SOoooo yeah, I went home, got the bridge out of my guitar, and covered the top in carbon fiber. it sounds SOOO much better!
just so much brighter, I loves it. Not to mention it looks funkey (picture soon).
plus..I made it myself..come on! that's got to be worth something right.

Any way, tired..must go

First some background information about me

I am 17
I got to Riccarton High where i do biology, chemistry, physics, calculus and music
umm i play piano
my nickname is sTIMulus

thats about all you need to know about me. lol.

basically, the way i see it, the role of any pianist in a band is to be a complete geek just to make everyone else look good. I do my best to fulfill this role within airplay.

That is all for now

Annoying Email

Well..came across an email today from a Christian friend of mine today.
Now, it was a pro Christianity thing, and of course I have NO problem with that (not sure exactly they were sending it to me...didn't they get the message? I'm already saved. But any way) So I got it and started reading it, turns out it was about death, untimely death as it stated. So I read on;

"Did you know these facts? I sure didn't;

John Lennon once stated in an interview,
"Christianity will die out, I don't even have to argue it, it just will. A week later he was shot six times"

Nooow (finished quoting by the way) this is what this email was filled with. Quotes of people who have bad mouthed God, and died. So, lets (for the sake of me not typing)just take this example into account.

1; They picked on Lennon, so it's not gonna rate highly with many people right?
And with any pro-Christianity email, you want people to relate to it and take in the message don't you? So mistake number one, attack an internationally known and loved figure.

2; Now, whats the point? Okay so in these instances people who bad-mouthed god died.
But, what's the point in knowing this and spreading it? A person can't actually become a Christian out of fear, it's got to be a personal choice, so if you're trying to say "be a Christian or die!"....I'm afraid it's not going to do any one any good.
Also, this email kinda gives god the wrongful image of;
"If you don't love me, DIE!" which is soooo totally wrong.
God loves every one reguardless of what they believe, and he'd love it if we all loved him. But he's not going to kill people for being against him!
Firstly, we all have free will, and god will NEVER jump in and take that away from us. So we're free to do what we like, with the only consequence being hell..(haha...not to be taken lightly of course). Secondly, if he DID kill people that he didn't think deserved to live, then why make them in the first place?
Before you were born, he knew you through and through. He knew every word you'd eveeeeer speak, SO if you're going to bad mouth god he'd know...so why make you exist in the first place, if he's just gonna kill you later.
Sure, you might say "TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD!" but once again that brings us the the fear idea. And as we've established, Christianity by fear isn't Christianity....it's the catholics from the dark ages.

So what should we do about this kind of advertising and defacing of Christianity?
Well, sadly there is nothing i can actually do with the email, apart from talk to the person who sent it to me and have a wee chat about how it's really not doing any good, and no one else, ever, should read it. Also we as Christians should show others that that's totally not the case with god. That he does love every one unconditionally, and will never stop loving us. Show the population that god is love, and when you're with god, there is nowhere else you'd rather be.

so..now that I've totally gotten over the initial "grrr" of reading such a counter-productive email, I'm gonna go and leave you with the thoughts above.

Enjoy

Jonny.

hope this has helped someone.

haha, so I got bored

Hello

SOoo..here's that verb I was talking about.
It has massive bass responce, but basically none on the other end of the scale.
So I'm calling it a bass verb haha because I can't reallllly make it again, with out spending money, and I don't exactly have any of that at the moment.

I don't how ever have a bass over here, so I've got to wait until I get back to really test it out, but I'm sure Steve would like another toy to mess with.
It has a pretty awesome foot step (like...war of the worlds meats JP1 kinda BOOOOOMING footstep) effect if you really kick it, so it might be kinda cool for some epic Muse type stuff.

Any who, I might go play some guitar...on my Nana's guitar as my strings haven't come yet :(

"Oh the book was much better than the movie.."

His neck snapped back hopelessly. mean while Jake had taken exactly three steps back, into a classic forward stance. Sweeping up his right leg from behind him, he used the momentum to power the oncoming jumping turning instep. Still dazed, Dave didn't know what was coming. Jake's foot sliced through the air with the accuracy of the ninjas he wished he could be. Just in the last rotation of the instep he thought he had it, when out of no where came a hand, thumb tucked in and fingers bend slightly, it was a perfect knife hand. He knew this knife hand, it was that, of the Evil Martin!

I should totally write a martial arts book, and just prove that movies can be better than books!

Spring verb is coming along nicelly, pictures to come.

Time Broken

Hmm

I'm not sure exactly how to describe today.
I did a bit, not a lot, but enough.
I watched some TV. Stargate SG1 (episode 4-7 of season 2)
I did some work on my video
Got it finished actually (exporting now)
Did some work on my Wah pedal
i haven't told you about that yet have I?
Researched a little, and found a place to buy nice cheap gear.
So I'm going with them.

Just want people here
just want people to have with me really

Any way
I must go.
First post in a while I haven't had anything guitar related in.

so here's a photo of my current effects set up.

I am mad, I swear

hehe, okay..so I know i've been bubbeling with selfpromisses about not building too much, etc..Butttt...those of you who really know me will know, taht that's never gonna actually happen.
SO I came up with a plan last night..or the night before, I can't remember.
Either way, it's gonna be fun hehe.

Ingredience;
Stainless steel spring (can make at work)
Stainless brackets to mount the spring (can make at work)
some wood
Two speakers (one driven)
and some tooth picks.

Mount the spring with as much tension as desired in between the brackets (about 35 - 40 cm apart).
Mount th speakers at either end of the spring mounts.
hot glue, or attach some how, the tooth picks to the cones of both speakers.
These are to go through small holes in the spring mounts.
attach the other end of the tooth picks to the spring itself (there should be NO tension on the cone at any sage during this process).
Modify the speaker outs and ins to hook up with your pedals.

When you play it will vibrate the cones in the driven speaker, which will vibrate down the spring, until it hits the opposite speaker.
Because a speaker is just a microphone, it will (by moving the cone of the passive speaker) create current inside the speaker (no unlike that created inside a guitar pick up) and send a signal out.
This is how to create a true spring reverb.

The diagram below is my version.
I haven't started construction of it yet, but after much thought, I predict that instead of this being a pure spring reverb, it will probably produce more of a slow attack delay verb sound, due to the positioning of the speakers (and the direction of the vibrations).

Feel free to copy this, and tell me how it goes (once again you can email on the sitemail address in red at the top right).

Enjoy

Jonny.

Z change

hehe, sooo turns out that the awes'ometer, as awesoem as it is, is gonna be a little impractical.
Oh yeah, and as it turns out, the Kaoss pad is gonna be on a stand that will come off of the board, SO new plan

Three loops

Distortion
Modulation
Crazy (looping)
To the Pad's gonna in that loop, in the stand.

so here's the new plan hehe

oh and I'm totally building my own wah by the way haha.
I'll let you know how that went when it's finished

Z Plan

okay so I know that i'm always buying and making stuff for my guitar, and yeah, it gets kinda pricey. So I've got a plan.
There is one, and only one thing I will build this year (ha.....lol...etc).
That is the following, I call it, the "Bi-loop awes'ometer board"

It will take about $45 to make the actual board, but to fill it totally haha...you're looking at about $770 before I can complete it.
but that's another story hehe.

The Awes'ometer I'm going to install is a WWII Amp Meter, made is 1943...so...not much gets more hard core than that! hehe.
Love it.
it's kinda a tribute to my Grandad, who owned the meter (along with a bunch of other ones that were left over from when he was working in the radio towers in Chch international airport). I'm sure he would have liked the quirkiness of the whole idea.

Any way, here's the board plan;
Red = Loops
Green = Inputs and Outs
Blue = Powering
(all cables will be inside the board, to add to the sexiness of the whole operation)
it'll be made of wood and fiberglass (building boats comes with it's perks, in this case the ability to fiberglass and the means to do it).

So once it's finished it'll go like this;

Awes'ometer (clean boost)
Tuner
RAT
FuzzFeed (home made distortion/fuzz)
Phase
WAH
Delay
Looper
MiniKP (korg Kaos Pad Mini)
Volume Pedal

personally, I'm pretty happy with it, and I just can't wait to get the whole thing up and runing.
But that'll probably be in like 10months, becasue I don't have much money right now.

Any who, *HUG*

Jonny.

helly all

yeah I know that video of the week is semi static, but until I get better net I cant really afordo to change it.

Ever since I stopped training I've just gotten weaker and weaker, which isnt fun. hopefully it'll come back.
